Morocco spends over $800M on restoration of 21 medieval neighborhoods

The Moroccan government has spent more than $800 million on restoration projects in 21 medinas (medieval neighborhoods) in various cities of the country, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch said at the session of the House of Representatives (the lower house of the parliament) in Rabat, Report informs via L'Opinion.

According to Akhannouch, “ancient medinas represent the tangible and humanitarian heritage of the kingdom.” In addition, the government is implementing a program of restoration and beautification of ancient fortresses (gasaba) and fortified settlements (gasr) located in different regions of Morocco.

Medinas, towns and castles are very popular among foreign tourists and are always included in travel itineraries. The most famous ancient neighborhoods, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, are located in the cities of Morocco, Meknes, Rabat, Tetouan, Fes, and Essaouira.
